Myeongdong Cathedral

Myeongdong Cathedral

I recently visited Myeongdong Cathedral, Seoul, a place that holds many cherished memories from my school days. Walking through its grounds again felt like stepping back in time.

Although I’ve visited Myeongdong Cathedral many times, this was the first time I carefully read through the guide map. The cathedral is also a stop on the Seosomun Pilgrimage Route, making it a significant site for those interested in early modern Catholic architecture and history.

Myeongdong Cathedral is not only an iconic landmark of the district but also the spiritual heart of Korea’s Catholic community. As the first parish in Korea, it serves as the headquarters of the Archdiocese of Seoul and holds deep historical significance. Designed in the Gothic style, it is said to have been planned by a French priest named Coste.

For me, Myeongdong Cathedral is more than just a place of worship—it was also my high school campus. Gyeseong Girls' High School was once located here, and the cathedral hosted both our entrance and graduation ceremonies.

The cathedral was originally called Jonghyeon Cathedral but was renamed after Korea’s liberation. In November 1977, it was officially designated as Historic Site No. 258.

Inside, the cathedral exudes a serene and sacred atmosphere. While photography is not permitted inside, I did hear a few camera clicks during my visit!

Even on a gloomy day, the grandeur of the cathedral is undeniable. The red brick facade gives the building a timeless elegance, don’t you think it looks stunning?

I took a moment to admire both sides of the main hall. The view on the right side felt incredibly familiar, bringing back countless memories.

At the very back of the main hall, there is a statue of the Virgin Mary, and below ground in the crypt, the first Korean priest, Father Kim Dae-geon, is buried.

The Catholic Hall and Father Coste Hall are part of the cathedral’s Cultural Center, offering spaces for reflection and learning.

There is also a designated area for spiritual and permanent confession, which was once the site of my high school. If you plan to visit for confession, here’s the schedule:

*Information of permanent confession

Mon (Monastic) 13:00-17:00 / Tue-Fri 11:00-20:00 / Sat, Sun 10:00am-20:00

After reminiscing about my school days, I stopped by the Logo Store at 1898 Plus, located right next to the cathedral. This souvenir shop sells various Catholic-related items, including crosses, candles, and rosaries.

Even if you're not Catholic, the store offers beautifully crafted items that can appeal to anyone. I was particularly drawn to a long, elegant beeswax candle and a unique cross that would make a wonderful home decoration.

Myeongdong Cathedral is more than just a religious site, it has been a sanctuary for the underprivileged, a symbol of Korea’s democratic movement, and a place of personal nostalgia for me.

If you're ever in Myeongdong, I highly recommend stopping by. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, this cathedral has something to offer.

Wouldn’t a visit to Myeongdong be a perfect plan for the upcoming weekend?
