Falo Pizza
I really love pizza. Whether it’s the pizza from the little wood-fired place near my house that only does takeout and delivery, or the many varieties from Papa John’s, I love them all.
Sure, it’s not exactly a health food, but that rich, melty cheese, the tang of the tomato sauce, and the unique flair of each topping coming together in one satisfying bite... It’s simply irresistible.
There’s this pizza place I’ve walked past for years, always looking in but never going in.
When I was a student, I didn’t have the money, and whenever I could afford a proper meal, I would always choose something filling over something fancy. It wasn’t until I got older and maybe a little more like an “uncle” who enjoys hearty meals that I finally gave wood-fired pizza a real try.
Falo Pizza, located in Hapjeong (Seoul), is a relatively old restaurant that has been in the same spot for over a decade.
Since they use a traditional wood-fired oven rather than a gas one, there’s always a big stack of firewood ready outside.
It was still early in the evening, so Falo Pizza felt relatively quiet and peaceful. The interior had a vintage charm; it looked like it hadn’t changed much over the years. It wasn’t trendy or sleek like newer spots, but maybe that’s what makes it easier to focus on the food itself.
The tables were fairly close together, but not so tight that you could hear every word from your neighbors. The slightly lively, bustling vibe actually suited the place and the food quite well.
The menu proudly emphasized once again that they serve wood-fired pizza. It featured a nice variety, including pizza, pasta, risotto, salads, and more. There was also a wine section on the menu, listing what was available by the glass or bottle.
We decided on the Prosciutto Rucola Bocconcini pizza, the Double Extra Margherita, and the Amatriciana pasta. Since one of our friends hadn’t arrived yet, we held off on ordering more.
Amatriciana pasta 198,000 won
The Amatriciana pasta came loaded with bacon, onions, and cherry tomatoes. It had a pleasantly spicy kick at the end that kept the overall flavor clean and balanced. The cheesy richness wasn’t overwhelming and paired really nicely with the house wine. Since the dish had a decent amount of saltiness, it matched well with a dry, not-too-sweet wine.
Prosciutto Rucola pizza 27,800 won
Next came the Prosciutto Rucola pizza, generously topped with thinly sliced prosciutto, a mountain of rucola veggie, bocconcini cheese, and fresh cherry tomatoes.
As soon as it hit the table with grated cheese and a drizzle of olive oil, I knew it was going to be amazing. I absolutely love how generous they were with the arugula. It felt like I didn’t even need a salad on the side.
Taking a bite, I was completely sold. The bitterness of the Rucola, the salty richness of the prosciutto, and the juicy pop of cherry tomatoes, everything I love was right there in one bite. Of course, it’s a matter of personal taste, but I’m sure any of my friends who enjoy wood-fired pizza would totally fall for this one.
Double Extra Margherita pizza 24,000 won
The Double Extra Margherita pizza arrived next. The crust was a little more charred than expected, but it didn’t taste bitter or burnt, so I didn’t mind it at all.
If anything, the slight smokiness actually added something nice to the rich cheese flavor.
It was a bit disappointing that the basil leaves were on the smaller side, but the dough was wonderfully chewy, and the balance between the tomato sauce and cheese was spot-on. A very satisfying bite overall.
We thought we had ordered enough food, but we started to feel like it wasn’t quite enough, so we decided to add one more dish.
Funghi Pasta 19,800 won
It featured wide, flat fettuccine noodles with three types of mushrooms: king oyster, shiitake, and button mushrooms, all coated in a rich cream sauce.
The aroma of truffles blended beautifully with the earthy mushroom flavors, and the creamy sauce brought it all together in perfect harmony. It was absolutely delicious.
The truffle aroma lingered warmly, and the mushrooms tasted like they’d been lovingly sautéed in butter. This Funghi Pasta left a huge impression; it was easily one of the most memorable dishes of the night.
On a rainy evening, Falo Pizza in Hapjeong turned out to be the perfect spot to gather with friends over delicious food and drinks. The chewy, soft texture of the wood-fired pizza and the incredibly flavorful mushroom pasta made for a warm, satisfying meal that lingered pleasantly long after we left.
The prices aren’t exactly low, but after such a delicious meal, it’s hard to feel like it wasn’t worth every penny. It’s one of those places that stays on my mind. I’m pretty sure I’ll be going back soon.
