Hieutu

Hieutu

Yongridan-gil in Yongsan has been getting a lot of buzz lately. It's a neighborhood where old buildings near Sinyongsan Station have been renovated into charming new spaces, attracting a steady stream of visitors.

Among the many spots here, one of the most popular is Hieutu (Yongsan, Seoul). I recently had the chance to visit the newly reopened Hieutu Yongsan branch, which relaunched in April.

Every table was filled with people happily enjoying their dishes, and the kitchen was buzzing with nonstop activity.

The interior was neat and well-organized. One wall was covered with Vietnamese newspapers. Though I couldn’t read them, they added a nice touch of character to the space.

I liked the large, easy-to-read menu at Hieutu. Our group of three ordered the spicy pho, crispy chicken neck, pork rice bowl, and a som tam.

Som tam  13,000 won

First came the som tam. Sweeter than usual, with less cilantro, making it a more approachable version of the dish.

Pork Rice  15,000 won

The pork rice bowl came with a perfectly cooked soft-fried egg, and breaking the yolk over the rice was deeply satisfying.

Hieutu Pho  18,000 won

The spicy pho had a bold, comforting broth. More like a Korean-style Jjamppong than a Thai tom yum. Fresh green onions and raw vegetables added brightness and crunch to the soup.

Crispy Chicken Neck  18,000 won

A fried dish made with chicken neck that looked incredibly crispy. Perhaps due to a backlog of orders, this one took quite a while to arrive at our table.

While it was crunchy, the batter felt a bit too thick and slightly greasy. Unfortunately, this was the least satisfying dish for me among everything we ordered today.

Hieutu is well-known for taking various Southeast Asian dishes and localizing them in a way that suits the Korean palate. The flavors are approachable for both younger and older diners alike. With so many dishes that would pair nicely with a cold beer, I think it’d be a great place to stop by in the evening as well.

Luckily, there was no wait, so we were able to enjoy our meal without any stress.
With how hot the weather has been lately, I don’t think I could’ve handled a long wait.
This visit honestly made me want to plan a real trip to Southeast Asia.
