Youngdong Seolleongtang
Near Exits 4 and 5 of Sinsa Station, you will find the iconic Youngdong Seolleongtang (Sinsa-dong, Seoul). This restaurant is so popular that it is not uncommon to spot well-known figures, including celebrities, dining here.
One of the first things you will notice is the large parking lot right outside, which is a rare and welcome convenience in the bustling city. This restaurant first gained fame as a go-to spot for cab drivers, a reliable sign of great and hearty food.
Recently renovated, the interior feels clean and modern while maintaining the charm of a long-standing establishment. Even during late hours, the place was nearly full, which is a testament to its enduring popularity.
We decided to order a half plate of Suyuk (boiled beef slices) and Seolleongtang (ox bone soup). The option to order a half plate of Suyuk is perfect for smaller groups of two or three, allowing everyone to enjoy a bit of everything.
While waiting for our food, I noticed a particularly tall customer entering the restaurant. To my surprise, it was the celebrity food critic and mukbang star mukboss Mr.JooYup. For those unfamiliar, Jooyup is known for dining only at places with exceptional food. His presence here is a sure sign that this restaurant serves top-quality dishes.
In fact, Seong Si-Kyung recently featured Youngdong Seolleongtang on his YouTube channel. It is clear that this spot is a favorite among celebrities.
Seolleongtang 13,000 won
The beauty of Seolleongtang lies in its simplicity and versatility. Start by seasoning it to your liking. Add chopped green onions, a pinch of salt, and a dash of pepper. The broth is lightly seasoned by default, so its rich umami flavor shines through even without additional salt
The depth of flavor was incredible, comforting, and satisfying, especially for a late-night meal.
The Kimchi and Seokbakji (radish kimchi) served alongside were excellent as well. The balance of acidity and spice perfectly complemented the richness of the soup.
Of course, mixing rice into the broth is a must. It elevates the dish, making it heartier and even more delicious.
Suyuk (1/2) 24,000 won
Youngdong Seolleongtang is not just a meal. It is an experience steeped in history and tradition. I can confidently say I have not had a better midnight meal in a long time.
For those who have yet to visit Youngdong Seolleongtang, you are truly missing out. And for those who have been before, you already know that one visit is never enough.
The next time someone asks where to find a great late-night meal in Seoul, tell them to head to Exit 5 of Sinsa Station. They will thank you for it.
