Anthracite Coffee (seogyo store)

Anthracite Coffee (seogyo store)

I’ve been wanting to visit Anthracite (Seogyo, Seoul) for a long time, and with winter in full swing, I finally made the trip. This three-story house-turned-café is as picturesque as I imagined, especially with the snow piled up outside.

As the year winds down, the tree at the entrance is decorated with ornamental lights, which must be stunning when lit.

Climbing up to the second floor, I was greeted by beautiful sunlight streaming in through the windows. The bright and sunny ambiance, combined with warm wooden finishes, made it a space I instantly loved.

The café is thoughtfully designed, with plenty of tables spread across all three floors. After some deliberation, we chose a spot near the ordering counter, though we were tempted by a lovely bar table. Unfortunately, it couldn’t accommodate the three of us.

Anthracite offers a wide selection of desserts and drinks. One thoughtful detail stood out: drinks are served with a small note asking customers to speak quietly so that their conversations don’t disturb neighboring tables. It perfectly complements the calm and peaceful atmosphere of the café.

Natsume soseki (hot drip coffee)  7,000

This savory coffee was my favorite, with a subtle almond or nutty flavor. The mild acidity made it smooth and pleasant.

Air & Dream (iced drip coffee)  7,000

This coffee had a floral aroma, which was both surprising and delightful. Despite the chilly weather, my companion opted for this iced coffee, and it turned out to be a fantastic choice.

On my way downstairs, I stumbled upon a small gallery space featuring a single piece of art. Its minimalism left me curious about its meaning, adding another layer of intrigue to the experience.

Anthracite’s serene vibe made it popular with solo visitors, many of whom were quietly working, reading, or simply enjoying their coffee. I found myself thinking that if this café were within walking distance of my home, it would be the perfect spot to spend afternoons with a book.

Despite the somewhat underwhelming dessert, the ambiance and quality of the coffee more than make up for it. Anthracite’s thoughtful design, peaceful atmosphere, and delightful drinks make it a place I’ll definitely revisit.
