Cafe Onion is one of Seongsu-dong’s most beloved coffee shops, known for its unique blend of vintage charm and modern aesthetics.

Housed in a beautifully renovated old building, it offers a cozy yet industrial atmosphere where visitors can enjoy delicious bread and coffee.

With additional locations in Anguk, Gwangjang Market, and Mia, it has also become one of the most recognized cafés in all of Seoul.

What makes Cafe Onion Seongsu truly special is how it retains the original character of its structure.

While the walls, both inside and out, remain untouched to preserve the rustic appeal, the ceiling has been repainted, adding a subtle contrast that enhances the overall ambiance. The large windows allow natural sunlight to stream in, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The café offers both rooftop and outdoor seating, making it an unexpectedly spacious retreat in the heart of the city.

Despite its central location, it never feels cramped, allowing guests to relax and take in the surroundings.

One of the biggest highlights of Cafe Onion is its bakery. Offering around twenty different types of bread, it has gained a reputation for its exceptional quality.

Some of the most popular choices include salt bread, chocolate salt bread, and the Black Cheese Bomb. However, with such a wide variety, there’s something for every preference.

Menu

I tried the Black Cheese Bomb, and it did not disappoint. The rich, cheesy flavor was perfectly balanced by the sweetness of the condensed milk topping, while the added nuts provided a delightful nuttiness. As for the coffee, the Americano I ordered was one of the best I’ve had in a while. It had a gentle acidity that allowed the natural sweetness of the coffee to shine through, pairing beautifully with the bread.

If I had to mention one downside, it would be the weekend crowds. Due to its immense popularity, it can get quite busy, making it harder to fully enjoy the experience. However, visiting on a weekday offers a much more peaceful and enjoyable atmosphere.
