Deus Cafe (samcheong-dong)
One crisp autumn morning, I decided to take a walk along Samcheong-dong, soaking in the mild weather and gentle breeze. It’s the perfect season to plan a relaxing date at the Bukchon Hanok Cafe, where modern aesthetics meet traditional Korean charm.
The flagship store of Deus Ex Machina (Samcheong, Seoul)
On a bright afternoon, I heard about a new bakery cafe in Samcheong-dong and made my way there. The cafe, named Old House of New Customs, was designed by Italian architect Andrea Caputo. It blends the hanok style (traditional Korean house) with a modern European twist, creating a one-of-a-kind setting.
From the outside, the wooden gate gave the impression that the cafe might be closed. However, after a moment, someone exited through the next automatic glass door, revealing the entrance.
As I walked in, I took a left turn into the corridor. Through the glass panels on my right, I caught a glimpse of the inner garden, which felt like a European courtyard seamlessly integrated into a traditional Korean hanok.
Turning the corner, I found the ordering counter, where the smell of freshly baked bread filled the air. Without even tasting it, I could understand why the Deus Café bakery has gained such a stellar reputation.

On one side of the cafe, you’ll also find the latest products from Deus Ex Machina, adding a retail element to the space.
As I ventured further, I stepped into the inner garden, where a neighborhood dog came over to greet me warmly.
The garden was mesmerizing, with a brilliant blue sky, traditional tiled roofs, and a beautiful tree in the center. It felt like I had entered another world, a tranquil haven amidst the bustling city.
One of the cafe’s specialties is the Old House Coffee, which I decided to try. It’s served cold, and the barista advised me not to stir it before drinking. The bottom layer, a mix of sweet milk cream and espresso, melted slowly on my tongue, offering a rich and satisfying flavor.
After the dog and its family left, I stayed in the inner garden, soaking up the sun and enjoying the serene atmosphere. The combination of the hanok-inspired architecture, lush greenery, and autumn sky made it hard to leave.
The Bukchon Hanok Cafe by Deus Ex Machina is more than just a cafe—it’s a destination that blends traditional Korean culture with modern design, offering a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle.
