Recently, my friend mentioned wanting to experience the unique ambiance of Hipjiro, so we made our way to Coffee Hanyakbang and Hyemindang, hidden in the quiet back alleys of Euljiro, Seoul.

Despite its secluded location, this spot has many loyal customers, and I quickly understood why.

 

Coffee Hanyakbang

Coffee Hanyakbang is located in Hyeminseo, which was the medical authority during the Joseon Dynasty.

A unique detail about this café is that on the last Sunday of every month, they offer free drinks to parents, a wonderful way to encourage family visits.

Though not a large space, the open ceiling and mother-of-pearl cabinets create a distinctive and elegant atmosphere. Nestled in a quiet side street of Euljiro, the café exudes an old-world charm.

Their best-selling coffee is the Pour Over (4,500 won), so we placed our order and took a brief tour of the café while waiting.

The interior decor is beautifully maintained, effortlessly blending vintage aesthetics with modern elements. Products for sale are also packaged stylishly, in harmony with the café’s timeless appeal.

A steep, winding wooden staircase leads to the second floor, which offers additional seating.

There’s also a small terrace that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. On a warm day, I can imagine this being the perfect place to relax.

 

Hyemindang

Located directly across from Coffee Hanyakbang, Hyemindang is a bakery and dessert shop that pairs perfectly with Hanyakbang’s coffee.

With so many tempting options, it was hard to decide what to order!

 

Pour over  4,500 won

We tried both hot and iced versions of Hanyakbang’s pour-over coffee. A unique touch was that the iced coffee is served with snowflake ice, enhancing the flavor and texture far more than regular ice cubes.

 

Lime Basil Tart (left) 7,500 won 

A refreshing dessert with a bright citrus flavor and a hint of herbal basil. A perfect combination for those who enjoy a light, tangy treat.

 

Mousse Omija (right) 6,800 won

A creamy, sweet, and slightly tart dessert, true to the original Omija berry flavor. This is one of the most famous desserts at Hyemindang, and it did not disappoint.

Finding a café in Euljiro that met my expectations was a challenge, but Coffee Hanyakbang & Hyemindang exceeded them.
