Lowkey (Seongsu store)
Lowkey (Seongsu, Seoul) is an incredibly well-known roastery café, loved by coffee enthusiasts for its exceptional brews and inviting atmosphere.
Conveniently located near Seongsu Station, it’s also close to a park, making it a great spot to relax and unwind. Just a short walk away is PEACHES, another local favorite, making Lowkey an ideal starting point for a leisurely day exploring Seongsu-dong.
Stepping into Lowkey, you might momentarily feel as if you’ve been transported to Tokyo rather than Seongsu-dong.
The café has a calm and sophisticated vibe, with ample seating inside, outside, and even in the basement. Given its popularity, securing a seat before exploring the rest of the café is a good idea.
In addition to their signature coffee beans, Lowkey also sells cookies and a variety of curated goods, perfect for coffee lovers looking to take a piece of the experience home.
Before ordering a filter coffee, you have the chance to smell the freshly ground beans, allowing you to choose a coffee that best suits your taste. Feel free to ask the staff about the origin and flavor profile of each option to find the perfect match.
Recently, I was particularly impressed by Ugandan coffee, so I decided to give it a try.
Upon arrival, it's best to find a seat first before placing an order. The staff will ask whether you prefer to sit inside or outside, and once you order, they’ll bring your coffee directly to your table based on the number you’re given.
While waiting for my coffee, I took a moment to explore the space. The first thing that caught my eye was the uniquely shaped, oversized table and the cozy sofa seating area.
With wood-toned décor and a steady, mellow soundtrack, the space exudes a cozy yet modern charm. Rather than feeling noisy, the blend of sounds, the murmur of conversations, the hum of the coffee grinder, and the rhythmic hiss of the espresso machine, created an immersive, almost meditative experience.
Brewing (Uganda Sipi, Zukura Bora) 6,500 won
I opted for a brewed coffee featuring Uganda Sipi and Zukura Bora beans. The beans were likely roasted to a medium or darker level, as indicated by their deeper color.
Yet, the coffee itself was beautifully balanced. Floral, fruity, and with a lingering sweetness that made it hard to put down.
It’s easy to see why Lowkey has earned such a strong reputation. The ability to curate and select exceptional coffee beans has become an essential hallmark of a great café, and Lowkey excels in this regard.
From the thoughtfully designed space to the carefully crafted coffee, Lowkey embodies everything you’d expect from a top-tier café. Despite the abundance of excellent cafés in Seongsu-dong, it remains a standout, consistently drawing in a steady stream of coffee lovers.
A visit here isn’t just about grabbing a cup of coffee, it’s about experiencing the art of specialty coffee in a setting that’s both understated and unforgettable.
