Taegeukdang (main store)
This is all about my visit to the famous and historic Taegeukdang bakery near Dongguk University Station. Actually, outside of the nearby Shilla hotel, I rarely visit this neighborhood.
"Established in 1946, Taegeukdang is Seoul's oldest bakery."
It first opened in 1946 and relocated to its current location in 1973.
In fact, I had planned to use my laptop at a Starbucks, but I stumbled into the main store of Taegeukdang when searching for a cafe near Dongguk University Station. Though I didn't know it had such a long history.
As you step inside Taegeukdang, the grandeur of the building becomes even more apparent.
According to the reviews, nothing has been changed since then. It has a lofty ceiling, and a beautiful chandelier, with a wooden interior.
Top 10 Best selling items
Taegeukdang has an extensive bread selection that was making it difficult for me to make a decision; however, they do provide a list of their most popular, consistently selling bread.
- Taegeukdang Monaca Ice Cream
- Sweet red bean bread
- Vegetable salad bread
- Gobang Castella
- Cream puff bread
- Roll cake
- Butter bread
- Jeonbyung set
- Mooncake set
- Butter cake
This butter bread was my pick among the 10 Top selling breads.
Although I really wanted this peanut bread, it was too big for me. Each package had an adorable, vintage style that I adored.
Whole Red Bean Bread 3,300 won
Whole red bean bread is my favorite kind of bread to eat. Overall, I enjoy plain red bean bread more than sweet red bean bread.
The Taegeukdang Box (Gift Set) 19,100 won
Additionally, you can choose a Taegeukdang gift package that exclusively includes popular breads. At 19,100 won, you get six different kinds of bread.
When I inquired about the possibility of having only Red bean bread and Butter bread in the package, they informed me that I could select the bread at random and purchase the gift box.It was 1,000 won for the individual gift box, and you could customize it with the bread of your choice.
A gift set of Taegeukdang’s famous moon cakes
There seem to be a lot of elderly people purchasing it. If you're looking for a present for an older person, consider the Taegeukdang moon cake gift set.
Butter Cake
It was so cool to see a cake that looked like something from the past that I had only seen in old TV shows or movies. This retro-style cake will bring back memories for an older person if you buy it for their birthday.
Seating
There are lots of places to sit and eat on the first floor. Bread can be purchased at the bread counter, and beverages can be ordered at the cafe adjacent to it.
You can place your drink orders at the Taegeukdang café, here.
Beverage Menu
I went with the Cream mocha latte (iced) that the staff recommended. It was a latte made with the same cream that goes into butter cakes.
Cream Mocha Latte (left) 6,500 won / Butter bread 3,100 won
The latte was visually appealing, and the aroma of the butter bread was absolutely mouth-watering.
Very tasty, because the abundant cream wasn't greasy and tasted like butter toast.
Additionally, I highly recommend this Cream Mocha Latte. I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty it is! Not only is it visually appealing, but the coffee bean flavor is so rich and flavorful that it complements bread perfectly. A delicious combination of butter bread and a mocha latte.
Whether you dip it in mocha cream or spread it on, butter bread is a good choice.
2F
On the second floor, you'll find more seating. Like a library, the second floor was incredibly peaceful and quiet making it an ideal place to relax.
Taegeukdang, Seoul
From 1946 until the present, Taegeukdang's history is explained on the wall.
Along with things that were used back then, I felt like I was in an old museum! Even the cash machine and electrical pipe that were used in 1973 were interesting because I had never seen them before.
"We haven't changed anything, but a lot has." Since the year 1946"
It was a complete accident that I ended up at the renowned Taegeukdang bakery near Dongguk University Station, but I'm so glad I went there.
Taegeukdang, the oldest bakery in Seoul made me feel like I was taking a tour of Seoul's old town. I will have to go back again soon and buy all 10 of the best-selling breads.
