This post is all about my visit to the famous and historic Taegeukdang (Jangchung-dong, Seoul) bakery located near Dongguk University Station. To be honest, aside from the nearby Shilla Hotel, I rarely find myself in this neighborhood but this trip was well worth it.

 

"Established in 1946, Taegeukdang is Seoul's oldest bakery."

 

Taegeukdang first opened in 1946 and moved to its current location in 1973.

Stepping inside Taegeukdang, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of the building. With its high ceilings, elegant chandeliers, and warm wooden interior, it feels like stepping back in time.

According to reviews, not much has changed since its opening, a rare find in a city that’s constantly evolving.

Taegeukdang offers an extensive selection of bread, making it tough to decide what to try. Fortunately, they provide a list of their top 10 best-selling items, which helped narrow things down.

Butter Cake

This retro-style cake looked like something straight out of an old TV show or movie. If you’re buying a birthday cake for someone who loves nostalgia, this would be perfect.

There’s plenty of seating on the first floor, where you can enjoy your bread. Drinks can be ordered from the adjacent Taegeukdang Café.

Upstairs, I discovered an even quieter seating area, reminiscent of a library, perfect for relaxing. The walls tell the history of Taegeukdang, from 1946 to the present, with displays of old bakery equipment and artifacts.

I even saw a cash register and electrical piping from 1973, things I had never seen before, making the space feel like a mini museum.

My visit to Taegeukdang was completely unplanned, but I’m so glad I stumbled upon it. As Seoul’s oldest bakery, it felt like taking a trip back in time to an earlier version of the city.

I’ll definitely be returning soon. Next time, I’m buying all 10 best-selling breads!
