Gwangjang Market
Gwangjang Market is one of Seoul’s most famous traditional markets, known for its diverse selection of delicious street food and constant buzz of activity. The market is always packed with locals and tourists alike, all eager to try its iconic dishes.
Let’s explore some of the most popular foods you can find at Gwangjang Market and why they’re worth trying!
I entered the market through North 4 Gate, conveniently located near Jongno 5-ga Station.
Right at the entrance, I noticed a long line of people waiting for twisted donuts (Chabssal Kkwabaegi), a must-try Korean-style glutinous rice donut.

Yukhoe (Korean-style beef tartare) is one of the most famous dishes at Gwangjang Market. Since it’s so popular, there’s often a wait, but it’s well worth it.
After a short break, we were led to a separate dining area, compact yet cozy, with a more relaxed ambiance.
Because I had several other stops planned for the day, I ordered the small version of Yukhoe Bibimbap. It came with a flavorful beef soup, which was an unexpected but pleasant bonus.
Service was impressively fast, my food arrived in just three minutes! Even the small portion was incredibly generous, making me wonder just how large the full-sized version must be.
As I wandered through the market, I came across several classic Korean street food options, including: Sundae (Korean blood sausage stuffed with noodles and seasonings), Jokbal (Braised pig’s trotters, a popular dish among locals), and Jeon (Korean-style savory pancakes) are all on display.
One of the most famous noodle spots at Gwangjang Market was also packed with customers, proving that their Kalguksu (Korean hand-cut noodles) remains a local favorite.

Since I was craving a refreshing dish, I decided to look for a sashimi place.
As soon as I sat down, the food arrived almost immediately, fresh and beautifully prepared.
The deliciously prepared octopus made my mouth watery.
The variety of sashimi was impressive, though it changes depending on daily availability
Most importantly, there was no fishy smell, a sure sign of fresh sashimi. The flatfish melted in my mouth, making it one of the best dishes I had at Gwangjang Market.
The owner recommended wrapping the sashimi in sesame leaves, which enhanced the flavors beautifully.

Before leaving, I couldn’t resist grabbing one of the twisted donuts (Chabssal Kkwabaegi) I had seen earlier in the day. At that moment, dozens of fresh donuts were being fried right in front of me, filling the air with a mouthwatering aroma.
The hot, freshly fried donuts had a crispy exterior and a soft, chewy inside, absolutely delicious!
Gwangjang Market is truly a food lover’s paradise, offering an endless variety of delicious Korean dishes in a lively, social setting.
Whether you’re craving savory, sweet, fresh, or fried, you’re bound to find something you love here.
