Gohyang Kalguksu (gwangjang market)
Korean culture, including music, beauty, and video, is gaining global popularity. Food is also receiving a lot of attention these days, with the menu options expanding significantly.
Let me introduce the Gohyang Kalguksu (Gwangjang market, Seoul), a dish that has even caught the attention of Netflix.
From Euljiro 4-ga Station or Jongno 5-ga Station, it’s about a 5-minute walk to Seomun Gate.
Continue straight ahead until you reach the square. The once calm shopping street now feels oddly unfamiliar.
If you continue toward the east entrance, a charming dining area will come into view. Once summer arrives, this area is sure to become much livelier.
If you head slightly to the right, you'll spot Gohyang Kalguksu. It's also a popular spot among many foreigners. After being featured as a restaurant in Seoul on the 2019 Netflix series Street Food, this location gained widespread fame.
The menu offers a variety of options, and the large photos make it easy for even foreigners to place their orders without any difficulty. Many foreigners were skilled at using chopsticks, and some even knew how to express their gratitude in Korean.
Rubber bands are provided so that women can easily tie their hair up.
The place has been kept tidy and clean, and the three individuals working at Gohyang Kalguksu seemed to get along very well.
The seating is arranged around the kitchen, and it was a delightful experience to watch the cooking process up close from the front seat.
Two side dishes, kimchi and yeolmu, are served. It was great that neither of them was too sour, and both maintained their crispness wonderfully.
Mandu Kalguksu 8,000 won
The dumpling kalguksu was made with an anchovy stock base, which kept the soup light and not greasy, perfect for my taste.
The slightly uneven hand pulled noodles add a charming touch, making the dish even more appetizing.
Each dumpling contains one kimchi dumpling and one meat dumpling inside. Since they’re homemade, the dumplings had a satisfying chewiness and were incredibly delicious.
Yeolmu-mul-guksu 8,000 won
I ordered the Yeolmu-mul-guksu. My mouth watered as I watched the ice cubes float in the refreshing soup.
While the Kalguksu was delicious, I personally preferred these noodles. The texture was perfect, with the medium-thick noodles cooked just right.
The friendly atmosphere at Gohyang Kalguksu definitely enhances the overall dining experience, making it even more enjoyable.

I called Gwangjang Market today,
and they said that all the shops are closed during the holiday (21st~24th Jan), but the restaurants/food places are open.
Still, I think it’s better to avoid the 22nd, the day of the Lunar New Year’s Day.
Hello, the 21nd through the 24th of January is a public holiday in Korea.
Unfortunately, I can’t call this kalguksu restaurant because there isn’t a phone number listed.
Reviewers have stated that only around half of the stores in the Gwangjang market opened last year during the Lunar holiday.
Especially on January 22, most businesses will be closed in celebration of the Lunar New Year.
When I get more information, I will share it with you.
Happy new year!
Do they open on January 22-24 ?
