Joseon Ok
The third generation of the family has been running the historic Joseon Ok restaurant in Euljiro, Seoul, since it first opened in 1937. It is famous for its sweet-seasoned ribs, known as Yangnyeom-galbi.
It’s about a 100-meter walk from Exit 6 of Euljiro 3-ga Station.
The signboard mentions that the restaurant has been a tradition for 70 years, but in fact, it has been serving customers for even longer. The second floor was renovated and is now called "The Oak."
Menu
Side dish
Yangnyeom-galbi 41,000 won
Joseon Ok's yangnyeom-galbi is grilled over a briquette fire, following the same method used before gas became widely popular. The dish was delicious and chewy, but it was slightly overcooked. I'm not sure if the master is still tending to the fire as they did in the past.
Mul-naengmyeon 12,000won
I chose mul-naengmyeon because Joseon Ok serves the "Pyeongyang" style of naengmyeon. While preferences may vary, I believe everyone would enjoy the less salty taste of this naengmyeon.
It was served neatly in a metal bowl. As many of you may already know, wrapping the seasoned ribs in the cold noodles enhances the flavor and makes the experience even more enjoyable.
Bibim-naengmyeon 12,000 won
I also ordered Bibim-naengmyeon, which came with a small bowl of soup on the side. However, since Bibim-naengmyeon has a strong flavor, it’s best to remove some of the hot sauce before mixing it, to balance the taste.
The second floor is recommended if you're looking for a more contemporary experience at Joseon Ok, with options like wine or Korean beef, regardless of whether you prefer the traditional setting. I'd like to emphasize that one seasoned beef rib is more than enough for two people.
