Daesungjip

Daesungjip

Daesungjip, a restaurant that has been serving up mouthwatering Doganitang (ox knee soup) and Suyuk (boiled Dogani and Tendon) for 60 years.

I love drinking during the day when the sun is shining and eating at eateries with a simple menu highlighting only a few great dishes. Also, this kind of Nopo (historic eateries) is my favorite. If it was nearby, I'd go every week.

The sign says Daeseongjip, the original restaurant that's been around for 60 years.

An atmosphere typical of an old eatery filled mostly with elderly people. Our table and the other were one of just two youth teams.

When you check out historic restaurants, you'll notice they're often filled with a lot of elderly people like here. Those restaurants are often super tasty and have some really genuine flavors.

Menu

The menu is all about Doganitang (soup) and Suyuk (tendon). Soju (Korean alcohol) is usually 5,000 won everywhere now, but here it's still 4,000 won, which is awesome.

Dogani Suyuk 30,000 won

The food showed up pretty quickly. Warm and chewy tendon, looks good. The meat connected to the chewy tendon was super soft and just melted in my mouth.

They are using a mix of domestic Korean beef and American beef now, but I heard they used to stick with just Hanwoo, which is the local beef. These days, they say that the quantity is insufficient, so they add a little American beef, but honestly, it doesn't even matter because it's all super tender and just melts in my mouth.

If you order the Suyuk, they serve you the Dogani soup for free. There's about half as much soup as there usually is in the regular Doganitang. Feel free to ask for more whenever you want.

Doganitang (regular)  13,000 won.

Doganitang with plenty of Dogani and Tendon inside. They serve the rice on the side.

Just sprinkle some pepper on the soup, taste the soup and the dogani first, then add rice and enjoy it with kimchi and pickled garlic. It's the best feeling ever.

Awesome soy sauce for dipping that Suyuk. The soy sauce is homemade, so it’s not salty at all, which means you can dip away without worry.

We've got cabbage kimchi, cubed radish kimchi, and garlic pickles on the side. The kimchi and cubed radish are delicious, but those garlic pickles are just next-level delicious.

It's a mix of raw garlic and gochujang (chili paste), and the garlic is pretty small, so they're just the right amount of spicy. They really balance out the Dogani soup and Suyuk.

Put rice in the soup and take a spoonful with some garlic pickle on top. It's super tasty. I was thinking about asking for more garlic but decided against it because the smell would be too strong if I ate too much.

The kitchen is totally open, no walls or anything separating it. Everything looks spotless.

By around 6 o'clock, the place was getting pretty busy with customers.

I've heard that there's usually a wait during busy lunch and dinner times, so it might be a good idea to avoid peak hours.

It was about 30 degrees that day, so it was pretty hot and sweaty just hanging out outside, but I totally don’t regret having the hot soup and warm tendon. It feels like I've been treating my body right with some healthy food.

This is the best Doganitang and Suyuk I've had in a while. If it were close to my place, I’d be going there every week.

Doganitang and Suyuk might look like simple dishes, but trust me, the flavor is anything but simple. I had a rough day, but as soon as I got some Doganitang, my mood totally turned around. It's no surprise that it's packed every day. I'd definetely go back again.

There's another 'Daesung Doganitang' over at Yeongcheon Market, and it's apparently run by his son. I checked out this spot called 'Daesungjip' near the Dongnimmun Station intersection.
