Gye Yeol Sa (Fried Chicken)
We usually visit Anguk-dong or the area near Gyeongbokgung Station because my friend likes the old town ambiance of Seoul. However, today we chose to go to Buam-dong instead.
The pleasant weather made the already picturesque neighborhood much more so.
According to my friend, there used to be a great chicken restaurant in this alley, but unfortunately, it closed down.
Gyeyeolsa, which is considered one of the best three fried chicken spots in Seoul, was our choice instead.
To get to Gyeyeolsa, it is recommended that you take a bus (1020, 7022, 7212) from Exit 3 of Gyeongbokgung Station and get off at the Buam-dong Community Center stop. It is only a two-minute walk from the bus stop.
We got there at 3:30 on Sunday and didn't have to wait in line.
"One chicken?" is the first question they ask when you take a seat. Because "Fried" is the only chicken option available. When you finish your order, they give you pickled radish, sauce, salt, and a bowl to put the bones in.
Menu
In addition to 'Fried chicken,' there are many other delicious menus such as ‘Golbaengi,' 'Odengtang,' and 'Chicken feet. Many diners were having Golbaengi along with the fried chicken.
With just the two of us, we were kinda sad that we could only go with 'fried chicken' to avoid wasting food.
The restaurant offers seating on both the main floor and the lower level. Restrooms for males are located in the basement, while those for women are on the main floor.
Fortunately, there was no line for us to enter, but the number of people waiting outside grew over time.
After completing the nearby Inwang Mountain Circular Trail or the Hanyangdoseong-gil Course, it appeared that many hikers were stopping by.
Fried Chicken 22,000 won
Fried chicken at this joint always comes with thick-cut fries. I started with the potatoes. Not greasy at all, with a wonderful texture, it was excellent.
Then I tried some of the chicken, and I couldn't believe how perfectly cooked it was; it was just amazing.
Honestly, before I got here, I only saw photos of the chicken and thought it was just a regular fried chicken, so I didn't expect much, but I totally underestimated it.
As a bonus, this sweet chili sauce is delicious and perfect for dipping the chicken. This sauce pairs wonderfully with the fried chicken and isn't overly sweet like many other franchise chicken spots. Along with the chicken, I dipped potatoes in this sauce.
I want to take my parents next time because I haven't had such good fried chicken in a long time.
There are still a bunch of good restaurants in Buam-dong that we have to check out. But Gyeyeolsa is definitely one I’ll keep coming back to when I'm in Buam-dong. This place is well known as one of the top three chicken spots in Seoul, and it's a place I always enjoy and want to go back to.
