Gye Yeol Sa (Fried Chicken)
While my friend and I often visit Anguk-dong and the areas near Gyeongbokgung Station for their charming old-town ambiance, today we decided to explore Buam-dong, a picturesque neighborhood that was even more beautiful with the pleasant weather.
We had heard great things about Gyeyeolsa (Buam-dong, Seoul), considered one of the top three fried chicken spots in Seoul.
It's tucked away in Buam-dong, which has a more serene vibe compared to the bustling areas of central Seoul.
To get there, we took a bus (1020, 7022, or 7212) from Exit 3 of Gyeongbokgung Station and got off at the Buam-dong Community Center stop. From there, it was just a two-minute walk to the restaurant.
We arrived around 3:30 pm (Sunday), and fortunately, there was no wait, although the crowd started to build as we dined.
When we sat down, the owner immediately asked, "One chicken?" a reflection of their straightforward approach. The only option on the menu is fried chicken, but it's done exceptionally well. In addition to the chicken, you're served a few sides: pickled radish, sauce, salt, and a bowl for bones.
Menu
Though the restaurant also offers dishes like Golbaengi (sea snail), Odengtang (fish soup), and Chicken feet, we opted to stick with fried chicken, as we didn’t want to waste food with just the two of us.
We noticed many other diners were enjoying the Golbaengi alongside their fried chicken, which was tempting, but we kept it simple for the day.
The restaurant offers seating on both the main floor and a lower level. It’s a cozy, no-frills space where the focus is clearly on the food. The restrooms for males are in the basement, while the women's restroom is on the main floor.
As the afternoon went on, the crowd began to swell, especially with hikers coming in after completing the nearby Inwang Mountain Circular Trail or the Hanyangdoseong-gil Course. It's clear that Gyeyeolsa is a popular spot for both locals and visitors looking to refuel after a good hike.

Once we got our plate of fried chicken, we were immediately impressed by its crispy, golden-brown exterior and juicy, tender interior. The fried chicken here is simple but masterful, relying on quality ingredients and expert preparation to deliver an unforgettable flavor.
The sides; pickled radish, salt, and the special sauce all complemented the chicken perfectly, offering a refreshing contrast to the savory chicken while also enhancing its flavor.
After a stroll through the charming streets of Buam-dong, Gyeyeolsa offers the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a well-loved dish.
The combination of great food and the peaceful neighborhood atmosphere made it a memorable experience, and I can definitely see why it’s a favorite of both locals and visitors alike.
