Hanchu
Nestled near the Apgujeong neighborhood in Seoul, Hanchu is a bustling restaurant renowned for its fried chili peppersand other comfort-food staples. My friend and I decided to visit after work to try their signature dish, and it turned out to be the perfect spot for a cozy meal, ideal even for year-end gatherings.
Despite the crowd, we were lucky to snag a seat inside. The restaurant exudes a warm, inviting atmosphere that feels straight out of a movie or drama. A perfect backdrop for catching up with friends over good food and drinks.
Menu
I think fried foods are their specialty, but they also offer a wide variety of other dishes. From what we saw at other tables, many people were enjoying Fried Chicken, Tteokbokki, and Fried chili peppers.
Deep Fried Chilly Pepper 19,000 won
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the fried chili peppers. While the portion size was slightly smaller for the price, the taste more than made up for it. The peppers arrived hot and crispy, as if they had just been made fresh.
Each pepper is generously filled with a juicy, meaty center, creating a delightful combination of crunch and flavor. For easier eating, scissors are provided to cut them open. These peppers were a true treat, especially when dipped in the tteokbokki sauce, a match made in heaven!
Hanchu Tteokbokki (rice-cake) 18,000 won
The tteokbokki was a standout dish as well. The balance of spice and sweetness was just right, making it appealing even for kids. The rice cakes were impressively large and thick, with a chewy texture that complemented the flavorful sauce. The addition of glass noodles added a fun twist, and the portion size was generous, larger than the fried chili peppers.
While the prices are slightly on the higher side (understandable given its location in the upscale Sinsa area), the quality of food and the cozy pub-like atmosphere make Hanchu well worth a visit. The fried chili peppers were an absolute highlight, and they left me eager to return to try their famous fried chicken, which looked amazing on other tables.
