Hannam Bugeotguk
I only recently discovered Hannam Bugeotguk (Hannam, Seoul), and to my surprise, it turns out to be a well-known, long-standing local gem in Hannam-dong.
Honestly, why did it take me so long to find this place? After my first visit, I got completely hooked. I even started ordering delivery from home!
The place is always buzzing with people, no matter what time you go. There are three floors, so it’s perfect for groups. We arrived around 5 p.m. and were seated on the second floor.
The interior has that nostalgic, old Korean restaurant vibe, but with clean restrooms and thoughtful touches that show they really care.
Menu
The menu is written boldly across the wall, and with so many tempting options, it’s hard to choose just one.
Side Dish
Side dishes are self-serve; just head over to the banchan (side dish) bar and help yourself. The stir-fried anchovies and Japchae were especially delicious!
Hannam Bukeoguk 10,000 won
It’s a rich, traditional dried pollack soup made with a deep beef bone broth, packed with tofu and generous pieces of pollack.
Perfect as a hangover cure or a warm pairing for drinks. Just a heads-up: it often sells out later in the day, so order early if you want it delivered!
Kkomak bibimbap 14,000 won
The cockle bibimbap was absolutely satisfying. The portion was generous, and they didn’t skimp on the cockles.
Mix it all together, and the savory seasoning hits just right, especially when combined with the popping texture of fish roe. I ended up scraping the bowl clean!
Mung-gae Bibimbap (left) 13,000 won & Crab Bibimbap (right) 20,000 won
The Tongyeong-style sea squirt and red crab bibimbap were both deeply flavorful.
The sea squirt had an ocean-fresh aroma that instantly transported me seaside. The red crab version included rich roe and innards, giving it an intense, nutty depth. Though the rice portion was smaller than other dishes, each bite was rich and satisfying.
Maegul-naktang 35,000 won
The Maegulnaktang, a soup packed with seaweed, oysters, and octopus, is a warm, nourishing dish perfect as a drinking side or hangover remedy. It comes piping hot, so be careful not to burn your mouth!
Dak-Jjim (Chicken) 35,000 won
The aged kimchi braised chicken came on a portable burner so we could keep it simmering. The chicken was tender and plentiful, and the aged kimchi was perfectly fermented, not too spicy, despite its fiery appearance.
Minyukjeon 30,000 won
The Minyukjeon is a set of pan-fried fish and beef slices. Though the portion wasn’t huge, it hit the spot when I was craving something savory and fried. Personally, I liked the fish version more; it reminded me of the way my mom used to cook it, which made it all the more comforting.
Sashimi (medium) 95,000 won
We ordered a medium assorted Hoe (sashimi) platter toward the end of our meal.
The slices were thick and fresh, offering a great texture and a very satisfying finish to the meal.
This place is worth visiting for the Bukeoguk (pollack soup) alone, and the delicious side dishes only add to the experience. Whether you’re craving comforting soup, nursing a hangover, or simply want to sip soju with something warm, this spot is a must. If you're a fan of dried pollack soup, don’t miss it.
