Jojo Kalguksu
We wanted to visit a nearby restaurant, Deoksujeong, after seeing Deoksugung Palace, but they told us that they close early on Saturdays.
Jojo Kalguksu was another restaurant we went to. Famous for its Kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), this restaurant first opened in Daegu (southern area of Seoul) but has since spread to Busan and Seoul due to its enormous popularity.
Plus, they sell 100 bowls per minute, which is an unbelievable record. More than the sales record, it amazes me that Koreans eat so much Kalguksu.
Menu
The house specialty here is Kalguksu made with Dongjuk, a type of clam.
Dongjuk is reputed to be a great ingredient in creating an excellent taste of broth that tastes much like clams.
We ordered two servings of it and a side of Pajeon (Korean style pancake with seafood).
There was a Makgeolli (rice wine) called Tiger on the back, so we thought we'd give it a go.
Side dish
The side dishes aren't fancy, but Kalguksu is perfect only with a side of tasty kimchi.
Tiger Makgeolli 5,000 won
Because of its balanced sweetness, this Makgeolli paired well with our food.
Kalguksu is served in a huge bowl, making it perfect for sharing.
Pajeon (Korean style pancake with seafood) 13,000 won
You can hardly see any empty space in the Pajeon because it is so liberally loaded with seafood. More shrimp and octopus than green onions.
The combination of the octopus, shrimp, and green onions produced a delectable flavor. Although a slight oiliness is unavoidable, the Tiger Makgeolli balances it perfectly.
Kalguksu 9,000 won (x2)
Now it's time to taste the house specialty. The broth appears to have been cooked for an extended time based on its color.
For the first time today, I tried Dongjuk clam, and it had the most pure flavor. Not sure how they cook, but the texture is similar to clams, and the flavor is superb without a fishy flavor.
And the noodles were cooked to perfection. When the great noodles combine with the refreshing broth, the result is always wonderful. I could see why this Kalguksu joint is so well-known around the country.
Adding a piece of kimchi will make it much more flavorful.
While this hot menu may not be ideal for the current heat wave, I can't wait to return when the temperature drops.
As we stepped out of the restaurant, we beheld the Deoksugung Palace lights illuminated in all their glory. I need to return the next time to really explore the area.
