Yeongdong Jang-eo (grilled eel)

It took us about an hour to get to Yeongdong Jang-eo (Apgujeong, Seoul) from Yeouido, thanks to the notorious evening traffic in Gangnam. But once we arrived, the culinary experience made the journey worthwhile.

The meal started with a delightful surprise: crispy fried eel bone. Light, crunchy, and full of flavor, it was the perfect way to kick off the evening.

Dokdo-Shrimp  150,000 won

This was my first time trying Dokdo shrimp, and it exceeded all expectations. The shrimp were plump, juicy, and incredibly flavorful, a true delicacy that I’ll be craving from now on.

Yukhoe and Wooni  192,000 won

After finishing the shrimp, we were served Yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) and Wooni (sea urchin), a pairing that was both luxurious and delicious.

The eel was the star of the night. It was enormous, the largest eel I’ve ever seen. After being prepared in the kitchen, it was grilled to perfection. The sheer size and quality made me question the eels I’ve eaten elsewhere.

This is the largest eel I’ve ever seen – it makes me question what kind of eel I’ve been eating until now!

Eel bile

For the adventurous, eel bile is served in a syringe to mix with soju. It’s said to have health benefits, and while I didn’t try it myself, it’s an interesting option for those willing to experiment.

Every dish we tried at Yeongdong Jang-eo was exceptional. While the location is a bit far from where I live, the quality and flavors of the food made the trip worthwhile. If you’re a fan of eel or looking to explore unique Korean delicacies like Dokdo shrimp or eel bile, this restaurant is a must-visit.
