Mapo-ok
For lunch, I went to Mapo-ok, a popular restaurant known for its Seolleongtang (Korean beef broth soup).
Mapo is not a typical destination for me, but when I looked for eateries in the area, I discovered Mapo Ok, a popular soup restaurant featured in the Michelin Guide.
From Mapo Station's Exit 1, it's a 5-minute walk.
Since 1949
Since 1949, three generations of the Mapo-ok family have run the business from where it is today.
It's a popular spot, so I wondered whether there would be a line when I planned my visit, but when I arrived at 2:00 p.m., there was no line at all.
Menu
We ordered a special version of Yangji seolleongtang (beef broth soup). The special version has more meat than the standard.
You can season your food with the salt and pepper provided and get kimchi and radish kimchi with your meal.
Seolleongtang eateries always have the best kimchi, right? The radish kimchi was fantastic, and the cabbage kimchi was tasty without being overly salty.
Upon request, green onion kimchi and aged kimchi come with a single serving and a note explaining that additional servings are not available.
We asked for it too because the fact that it cannot be refilled made us curious about how tasty it could be.
The kimchi that had been aged tasted amazing. Don't forget to ask for the green onion kimchi and aged kimchi.
The staff adds plenty of green onions to the soup before serving.
Yangji seolleongtang (special) 23,000 won
The soup tasted fantastic as I expected.
Even though I did not season it with salt and pepper, the soup was so rich and flavorful that I would want to enjoy it with a bottle of Soju (a Korean alcoholic beverage).
It's been a while since I had soup paired with soju for lunch.
Noodles, rice, and meat are all included in the soup. The meat was juicy and plenty. Both the flavor and the tenderness were excellent. The quality of the meat was outstanding.
Because there is a lot of meat in it, some people can feel a little oily after eating it.
If you find yourself in the Mapo neighborhood, you must stop by. As far as Seolleongtang goes, this is the top tier. It's a bit pricey, but after you try it, you'll understand why.
