Namdaemun Vegetable Hotteok
Namdaemun Market in Seoul is a bustling hub of street food and local specialties, offering a wide array of flavors. During my visit, I enjoyed two of the market's most famous dishes: Galchi Jorim (braised cutlassfish) and Vegetable Hotteok. The vibrant atmosphere, mixed with locals and tourists, set the perfect stage for this culinary journey.
After much anticipation, I joined the queue for Namdaemun Vegetable Hotteok, a highly popular stall located next to the IBK Industrial Bank near Hoehyeon Station Exit 5. Though there are several Hotteok vendors in the area, the long line here was a clear testament to its popularity.
After around 15 minutes in line, I was finally able to place my order.
Menu
The stall offers Vegetable hotteok, Honey seeds hotteok, and Red bean hotteok.
Each Hotteok costs only 1,500 won, making it an affordable treat. For an additional 1,000 won, you can get soy sauce with onions to enhance the flavor.
The soy sauce, enhanced with onions, added the perfect tangy and savory touch. It balanced out the mild flavors in the middle of the Hotteok, making the overall experience even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend getting the sauce if you order more than one Hotteok.

The Hotteok is fried in boiling oil, giving it a golden, crispy exterior that looked incredibly appetizing. It was served in a paper cup, making it easy to enjoy while exploring the market.
Inside was a generous portion of Japchae (glass noodles with vegetables), which was well-fried and flavorful. The quantity of the filling exceeded my expectations, making it a satisfying snack.
The initial bite was flavorful, with the Japchae offering a soft, chewy contrast to the crispy Hotteok shell. However, the center was slightly bland, prompting me to try it with the optional soy sauce.
The Vegetable Hotteok at Namdaemun Market is a must-try. Its affordable price, crispy texture, and generous filling make it a standout snack. Pairing it with the soy sauce takes the flavor to the next level, and the lively market atmosphere adds to the experience.
I’m already looking forward to returning to Namdaemun Market to enjoy this treat again. Next time, I’ll make sure to grab the soy sauce right away and perhaps try the honey or red bean versions as well.
