Namdaemun Vegetable Hotteok
Galchi Jorim (braised cutlassfish) and Vegetable Hotteok are two of the most popular dishes in Namdaemun Market.
I started with the Galchi Jorim and then moved on to the famous Vegetable Hotteok. There was a line out the door since the place was so popular.
Vegetable Hotteok is widely available all across Namdaemun Market.
Famous Kim Jin-ho Hotteok, which was featured on a TV show and is conveniently located directly next to Exit 5 of Hoehyeon Station, unfortunately, shut down early.
So, I went to the Namdaemun Vegetable Hotteok, which is conveniently located adjacent to the IBK Industrial Bank. If you leave Hoehyeon Station at Exit 5, you will be able to see it immediately on your right.
Although there is another store directly next door, I was intrigued by the long queue of customers here and decided to give it a try.
Many tourists visit Namdaemun Market, possibly because it is close to Myeong-dong. There seems to be a good mix of locals and tourists in line at this Hotteok joint.
After around 15 minutes in line, I was finally able to place my order.
Menu
They had Hotteok with vegetables, Hotteok with honey seeds, and Hotteok with red beans.
At only 1,500 won
Hotteoks that have been fried in oil are really tasty. To me, Hotteok fried in boiling oil is more satisfying than Hotteok baked without oil.
Soy sauce 1,000 won
Soy sauce containing onions is available for 1,000 won.
If you're ordering more than two vegetable hotteoks, you should definitely go for the sauce because, after eating it, I believe it would be much more delicious with the sauce.
Vegetable Hotteok 1,500 won
I had to wait a while, but once I placed my order, the Hotteok came out quickly.
Since it came in a paper cup, I sat on the sidewalk in front of the shop and ate it. At first glance, it already seems delicious and crisp.
After taking a mouthful, I was astonished to find well-fried Japchae (vegetable with glass noodles) inside and a considerably greater quantity than I had anticipated.
The price of 1,500 won seems even more cheap when considering the abundance of Japchae within.
At first, soy sauce was applied to the Hotteok so that the Japchae within would have the correct amount of flavor. Despite the heat, I couldn't stop popping it into my mouth because of how good it tasted.
Having found the middle to be a little bland, I decided to pick up some soy sauce to dip it in.
Conclusion
At Namdaemun Market, I tried the local specialty, vegetable hotteok. Even more amazing was the low price and deliciousness.
When I return, I definitely want to visit there again. Getting the soy sauce and eating it together will enhance the flavor. So, I recommend eating with the sauce.
