Okeunnae 2 Dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken)
Okeunnae 2 Dakgalbi (Yongsan, Seoul) is a must-visit Korean restaurant near Sinyongsan Station.
As a Michelin Bib Gourmand-listed restaurant, I was eager to try it after hearing rave reviews from a friend who lives in the area. I wasn’t disappointed, the food was fantastic!
After opening its first location in Yongsan, Okeunnae Dakgalbi expanded to multiple spots, including Sinyongsan, Insa-dong, Gangnam New-Core, and Seongsu-dong, bringing the total number of locations to seven. We visited Okeunnae 2, conveniently located just by Sinyongsan Station.
We arrived at 6 pm on a Saturday, and the restaurant was already packed. Thankfully, the wait was only about 10 minutes, though we were advised that there would be a two-hour dining limit due to the high volume of customers.
Okeunnae Dakgalbi has been frequented by many famous people, which speaks to its popularity.
Menu
The Dakgalbi (14,000 won) here pairs well with a variety of toppings like steamed eggs, fried rice, and Makguksu (buckwheat noodles). Since there were six of us, we ordered six servings of Dakgalbi with different toppings, including fried rice, sweet potatoes, and udon noodles.
The Dakgalbi comes served in a heavy cast-iron pan, filled with seasoned chicken and vegetables. Constant stirring is necessary to ensure the chicken doesn’t stick to the pan, and this process took longer than expected.
The chicken was tender and flavorful, and the cabbage added a slight sweetness. Despite the initial impression of being overly spicy, the seasoning turned out to be a well-balanced mix of sweetness and spice. This restaurant truly deserves its Michelin recognition.
A friend who had introduced me to Okeunnae Dakgalbi recommended adding udon noodles after the Dakgalbi is finished. We followed this advice: after the chicken was gone, the staff added udon noodles to the hot pan and stir-fried them until they absorbed all the flavors from the Dakgalbi. The result was a satisfying combination of savory flavors.
After finishing the Dakgalbi, we couldn't resist ordering a side of Fried rice, even though we were already stuffed. We only ordered one serving, but the owner gave us more than enough to enjoy. We topped it off with cheese, and even though I was nearly full, I couldn’t stop going back for more.
If you're in the Sinyongsan area and looking for a great place to eat, Okeunnae 2 Dakgalbi is definitely worth checking out!
