Okeunnae 2 Dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken)
Near Sinyongsan Station is where you'll find Okeunnae 2 Dakgalbi.
Since it was a Michelin-listed restaurant and came highly recommended by a buddy who lives in Sinyongsan, I decided to check it out. The food was fantastic.
After opening its first location in Yongsan, Okeunnae Dakgalbi expanded to Sinyongsan, Insa-dong, Gangnam New-Core, and Seongsu-dong, for a total of seven locations. Okeunnae 2, which is conveniently located by Sinyongsan Station, was where we went.
The restaurant is recommended in the Bib Gourmand section of the Michelin Guide, and parking is available just in front of the store.
This enormous restaurant was already packed when we arrived at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Thankfully, we just had to wait around ten minutes to be seated.
Numerous famous people have stopped by Okeunnae Dakgalbi. We were asked to dine within two hours because the restaurant has always customers waiting outside.
Dakgalbi (14.000 won) pairs well with a wide variety of toppings. Drinks, steamed eggs, fried rice, and Makguksu (Buckwheat noodles) are also on the menu.
Since there were six of us, we ordered six servings of Dakgalbi (chicken) with various toppings (including fried rice, sweet potatoes, and udon noodles).
Above, you can see three servings of Dakgalbi. Vegetables and huge seasoned chicken fill the center of a heavy cast-iron pan.
Constant stirring was required to prevent the chicken from sticking to the pan. Longer than twenty minutes was required.
A buddy of mine was busily stirring Dakgalbi. Keep stirring until the crispness has been removed from the fresh cabbage.
We asked if it was time to eat, but were told it wasn't. Keep stirring.
They estimated 20 minutes of stirring time, but it took much longer. Whereas before I could only see veggies, I can now see toppings such as sweet potatoes and rice cakes.
I kept asking the staff. What about now? Can I eat? The response he gave was, "Not yet."
At long last, we got an OK. The food dried out to the point where it resembled a stir-fry.
Took a bite out of the chicken and cabbage and it was incredible! The chicken was tender and flavorful, and the cabbage added a touch of sweetness. Despite the first impressions, the seasoning was not overly spicy; rather, it had a pleasant balance of sweetness and spiciness.
This restaurant deserves to be listed on the Michelin Guide.
A recommendation for udon noodles came from the friend who first introduced me to Okeunnae Dakgalbi. Eat the chicken first, then add the udon later and stir-fry everything together.
Udon noodles were placed on the hot iron plate by the staff.
Stir-fry it for a while so the udon noodles can absorb all the flavors.
After finishing the Dakgalbi, we asked for a side of fried rice. Even though I was about to explode, I couldn't skip the teppanyaki fried rice.
We only ordered one serving of fried rice because we were already stuffed, but the owner gave us a lot more than we ordered.
We added cheese on top, too. Even though I was completely stuffed, I couldn't stop reaching for more fried rice. Dakgalbi and cheese fried rice are two dishes you just must try.
