Pyeongyang-jib
Pyeongyang-jib (Yongsan, Seoul) is a longstanding gem near Samgakji Station, offering a wide variety of barbecued meats and hearty dishes. I had the pleasure of dining here with my family, indulging in Gopchang (beef intestines), several cuts of meat, and delicious alcoholic beverages.
The restaurant’s vintage signage exudes old-school charm, hinting at its history and popularity. Initially, I planned to make a reservation, but since they welcome walk-ins on Sundays, we decided to visit without one.
Arriving early meant we were seated quickly, but the restaurant filled up fast. Thankfully, we were guided to the spacious second floor, which provided a more comfortable and relaxed dining experience.
Menu
Chadolbagi 28,000 (150g)
We started with Chadolbagi (thinly sliced beef brisket), which cooks quickly on the grill. The meat was tender, rich in flavor, and an excellent way to begin the meal.
Yang 28,000 (150g)
Next up was Yang (beef tripe), my personal favorite. The chewy, satisfying texture made it hard to stop eating. Grilled over hot coals, the smoky flavor paired beautifully with either a simple sesame oil and salt dip or a spicy red sauce.
Gopchang 26,000 (150g)
While flavorful, the Gopchang felt slightly drier compared to the richer, juicier versions you might find at Gopchang-specialty restaurants. This could be attributed to the charcoal grilling, which lends a distinct smokiness. For Gopchang enthusiasts, one serving should suffice here, while focusing on other cuts.
After finishing all we decided to order more. We added one more serving of Chadolbagi, plus one each of Yang and Arongsatae.
Arong-sa-tae 27,000 (150g)
The Arongsatae was a delightful surprise. Seasoned with a subtle bulgogi-style marinade and a hint of spice, it quickly became a favorite at our table.
Yangbap (Fried rice with Yang) 16,000 won
A must-try at Pyeongyang-jib, Yangbap is a fried rice dish prepared with beef tripe. While I usually prefer a crispier texture, the moist version here was still incredibly flavorful and satisfying.
Naejang Gomtang 15,000 won
To end the meal, we ordered Naejang Gomtang, a hearty soup made with beef intestines. Its rich, savory broth felt like the ultimate comfort food and would undoubtedly make for an excellent hangover cure.
From the perfectly grilled meats to the hearty rice and soup dishes, Pyeongyang-jib lived up to its reputation as one of the go-to spots in Yongsan for barbecue enthusiasts. The vintage atmosphere, combined with quality ingredients and generous portions, makes it a must-visit for fans of Yang, Gopchang, and other cuts.
