Seongwoo Seoseo Galbi
After a late breakfast on the weekend, I found myself craving something hearty by mid-afternoon. My search for a nearby eatery led me to Seongwoo Seoseo Galbi (Mapo, Seoul) a highly praised marinated Galbi (beef rib) restaurant that opens at 3 pm. Since my husband is a huge fan of ribs, we headed there right when it opened.
From the moment we arrived, the restaurant exuded a nostalgic charm. Autographs from celebrities lined the walls, and there was even an old oil drum reminiscent of the days when diners stood and grilled their barbecue over briquette fires years ago.
Even though we arrived right at opening time, there was already a small group of people waiting.
Menu
Seongwoo Seoseo Galbi keeps it simple with just one main item: Galbi (Marinated beef ribs). To me, this is always a sign of a restaurant confident in its specialty.
We ordered two portions of Galbi and two bowls of rice to accompany it.
Side dish
The side dishes were fresh and complemented the ribs perfectly. Cucumber, onion, garlic, and red pepper paste were served to create a slightly spicy and refreshing salad-like pairing. The standout, however, was the Altari Kimchi (young radish kimchi) that came with the rice. Its bold flavor and perfect fermentation made it one of the best Altari kimchis I’ve had. It was so good, I’d recommend ordering rice just for the chance to enjoy the kimchi!
Galbi 26,000 won (x2)
The Galbi (Korean beef) used here is of exceptional quality, sourced directly from a ranch, and the difference in flavor is undeniable.
The ribs are first lightly grilled in the kitchen over a high flame and then brought to the table to be finished on a briquette fire. The owner kindly took care of the grilling for us since the restaurant wasn’t too busy when we visited.
This sauce makes beef ribs taste better.
Try some cucumbers with this red pepper paste.
Pair the Galbi with white rice and Altari kimchi for an unbeatable combination of rich, smoky flavors and tangy freshness.
No Korean barbecue experience is complete without Soju, and this meal was no exception. Weekend afternoon drinks always make the food taste even better, and the relaxed atmosphere here made it all the more enjoyable.
The meat was tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. It almost melted in my mouth with every bite. Even when dipped in their special sauce, the flavor remained well-balanced and not overly salty.
Add garlic and red pepper paste to your wrap for an extra kick, or enjoy the Galbi on its own to fully appreciate its depth of flavor.
Two extra Galbi
If you’re a big eater, consider ordering extra portions. The servings are modest, and two portions can easily be finished by one person.
To round off the meal, the restaurant served Sujeonggwa (traditional cinnamon punch), which was a sweet and refreshing end to a truly satisfying dining experience.
The combination of high-quality Hanwoo, nostalgic charm, and attentive service makes it a standout destination for anyone craving marinated beef ribs.
For my husband and me, this place now ranks at the top of our list of rib restaurants, even surpassing some of Seoul’s other well-known spots. The rich flavors of the Galbi, the freshness of the side dishes, and the friendly staff make it an experience worth repeating.
