Youngil Bunsik
On a quiet Sunday afternoon around 2 pm, I finally visited Youngil Bunsik (Mullae-dong, Seoul) a popular eatery I’ve had on my must-visit list for quite some time. Despite arriving after the typical lunch rush, the restaurant still had a line, proof of its enduring popularity.
With three groups ahead of us, the wait time was relatively short, only about 10 minutes. A staff member came to take our order while we waited, which sped things up once we were seated.
Menu
The restaurant has a nostalgic vibe, complete with condiments on each table and a self-service area for water and scissors. The Kimchi is served in a large communal bowl, so diners can scoop out their desired amount into smaller dishes, a nice, homey touch.
We ordered Somyeon (thin noodles), Mandu (dumplings), and the highly anticipated Kal-bibim guksu (spicy noodles).
Somyeon 8,000 won
This bowl featured medium-thick noodles topped with eggs, green onion, tofu, and seaweed flakes. The broth had a comforting depth of flavor, elevated by a hint of spice and pepper. It’s the kind of dish that warms you up inside and feels like a hug in a bowl.
Mandu (dumpling) 7,000 won
The dumplings were delicate, with a flavorful filling that paired perfectly with soy sauce or a bit of Kimchi. The texture and seasoning were spot on, making this a simple yet satisfying dish.
Kal-bibim guksu 8,000 won
The star of the meal, the Kal-bibim guksu, came with a separate bowl of hot broth on the side. Topped with cucumbers and lettuce, the noodles had a spicy kick followed by a subtle sweetness that balanced the flavors beautifully.
While the noodles were tasty, I was slightly disappointed that they weren’t cold, especially given the hot weather that day. Bibim guksu is typically best enjoyed chilled, so perhaps this dish is better suited for cooler months.
The portion sizes were incredibly generous, even my husband struggled to finish everything. The combination of the Kal-bibim guksu and mandu was particularly satisfying, as the dumplings provided a nice contrast to the spicy noodles.
Youngil Bunsik lives up to its reputation as a staple of Mullae-dong’s food scene. The generous portions, affordable prices, and classic flavors make it a must-visit spot for anyone craving hearty Korean comfort food.
While the Kal-bibim guksu was delicious, I’d recommend trying it in cooler weather to fully enjoy its flavors. And if you’re looking for something warming and satisfying, the hot noodles and mandu are excellent choices.
