Somunnan Gamjatang (seongsu-dong)
The famous Somunnan Gamjatang (pork bone stew) in Seongsu-dong Seoul, is definitely a place worth the wait.
Whenever I visit Seongsu-dong, I always notice a long line outside a particular restaurant. I can’t help but wonder why there’s always such a large crowd waiting for the Gamjatang.
Somunnan Seongsu Gamjatang is a popular restaurant that has been featured on several television programs and on the YouTube channel of famous musician Sung Si-kyung.
When I visited on a weekday at 13:30, well after lunchtime, there was still a line. I had to wait about 10 minutes, which was much quicker than the wait would be in the evening.
Simply wait in line at the entrance; no tickets or waiting lists are needed.
Menu
Gamjatang (for sharing) and Gamjaguk (individual portion) are the two specialties. It seems that Gamjaguk is often ordered by many as a quick and easy lunch. To satisfy my curiosity, I ordered the small Gamjatang.
They gave me a cooker that I had never seen before. At first glance, it looked like a plate, but it generated intense heat.
Mustard sauce (a must when eating Gamjatang)
Side dish
Kimchi, Chilli pepper, Cucumber
Gamjatang (small size) 26,000 won
The gamjatang is ready to eat as soon as it arrives, but the soup tastes much better after it has simmered and reduced for a while.
Dipping the meat in the mustard sauce makes it even more flavorful. Unlike regular mustard, this sauce had a distinctive taste that elevated the dish.
There are five or six bones, each with a generous amount of meat, making it more than enough for two people to share.
When there was still some soup left, we ordered fried rice. Since each Gamjatang restaurant prepares it differently, I was curious to see how the fried rice here would taste.
The rice was cooked with vegetables and seaweed in a flavorful way. It wasn’t too spicy, but so delicious that I couldn’t stop eating. One serving was nearly enough for two, so I couldn't finish it all and ended up with a little leftover.
The Gamjatang itself is incredibly tasty and can be considered the standard for truly delicious Gamjatang. If you prefer very strong flavors, you might find it a bit mild, but I believe most people will enjoy its taste.
Given the reasonable price and generous portion size, I'll definitely return the next time I'm in Seongsu-dong. Next time, I plan on adding Sujebi (hand-pulled dough) to my Gamjatang, as I’ve heard it’s absolutely delicious.
