Won Daegu Tang (cod soup)
There are plenty of excellent eateries in Yongsan, particularly in the Samgakji neighborhood.
An alley crowded with Daegu Tang (cod soup) restaurants can be found as you exit Samgakji Station (exit 14). So far, I've seen numerous food alleys like Gopchang (beef intestines BBQ) Alley and Chicken Alley, among others. But I had no idea there was also a Cod Soup Alley.
And without a doubt, Won Daegu-Tang is the most well-liked eatery in this Alley. Poor signage belies the store's lengthy history; it first opened its doors in 1979 and has been serving delicious cod soup ever since.
The first floor of Won Daegutang offers plenty of seating, but it was quite full when we arrived, so they escorted us to the second floor.
Because of its smaller size and fewer tables, the second floor is ideal for quieter dining than the first floor.
Menu
Among the menu items, Daegu Tang (Cod soup) is likely to be the most ordered. We had one Fried Cod and four portions of Daegu Tang (cod soup).
Side dish
Radish kimchi (left) and Dongchimi (right)
Dongchimi (radish water kimchi)
Crunchy, refreshing, and flavorful, the Dongchimi tasted great.
Until the cod soup boils, you should not open the pod lid. Because there are so many bean sprouts in the soup, opening and closing the lid could release an off-putting fishy aroma.
Daegu Twigim (deep-fried cod) 20,000 won
We ordered it because the people at the next table were enjoying it so much.
So tasty; it's like fish & chips but without the french fries.
Delicious flavor comes from the combination of the tender cod flesh and the slightly thick yet crunchy batter. I believe that high-quality cod would be used.
Daegu Tang 14,000 won * 4 portion
As you delicately stir the red seasoning in the middle, the soup transforms from a pale white into a delicious spicy fish soup.
Now it has transformed into a nice spicy cod soup. Just looking at this soup made me want to crack open a bottle of Soju (Korean alcoholic beverage).
A hearty cod soup filled with fish flesh, roe, and others.
How to eat deliciously
Although it tastes good on its own, the owner of Wondaegutang will show you how to make it more tastier.
Prepare a sauce with mustard, soy sauce, vinegar, and pepper. Then eat it in the following order: water parsley > bean sprouts > fish roe > cod. It took the owner 40 years to perfect this recipe, so trust and follow.
The soup turned out delicious and perfectly seasoned after a time of boiling.
Add Sujebi (hand-pulled dough / 2,000 won) to this spicy cod soup for an extra delectable twist.
Fried rice 3,000 won (per portion)
I highly recommend trying the fried rice.
With the little broth that's left, she stir-fries the rice perfectly, and her skill at using just one ladle to fry and spread it out evenly is a work of art.
When it rains outside, I believe this restaurant will come to mind more frequently. Now, I am pleased to know another spot to go for Soju in the Yongsan Samgakji area.
