Yeong Gwang Tongdak

Yeong Gwang Tongdak

This is Yeonggwang Tongdak's original store, the legendary first location. It’s been open since 1984, serving old-fashioned Korean fried chicken in Seochon for over 40 years now.

Originally, it was a takeaway-only spot. But just last year, they opened a second location nearby where you can dine in.

The second branch is tucked away in a little alley in Seochon, just a 2–3 minute walk from the original shop. That’s where we were headed, Yeonggwang Tongdak 2.

There aren’t many tables available, but I highly recommend heading up to the second floor for a cozier atmosphere.

We arrived right when the store opened, so we were the first customers of the day. While dinner is great, I’d say a sunny afternoon on the weekend is the perfect time for some chicken and beer.

Menu

The menu is quite simple. The star here is the whole fried chicken, starting at 20,000 won. It’s not exactly cheap for retro-style chicken, but the flavor is absolutely worth the price.

They also offer sides like fries and tteokbokki, making it a great place to enjoy drinks and snacks with a group.

Side dish

A cold draft beer is always a win. Thanks to the happy hour deal before 4 PM, we got it for 3,000 won instead of the usual 5,000, what a treat!

Sunsal Banban Chicken (half-and-half boneless chicken) 23,000 won

We ordered the half-and-half boneless chicken (23,000 won). It was freshly fried, with a perfectly crispy coating. The quality was better than expected, and of course, it paired flawlessly with beer. Chicken and beer really never disappoint.

I usually prefer marinated chicken, but here, the plain fried version really stood out.

We worried it might not be enough, but the portion turned out to be just right for two people.

To be honest, it’s not mind-blowingly delicious, but there’s something nostalgic and satisfying about the crispy, clean taste of this old-fashioned chicken. That’s what keeps it memorable.

Enjoying crispy chicken and cold beer in a traditional hanok setting, under the soft warmth of sunlight, it was such a romantic and cozy experience. If you’re looking for a place that feels like a sunny, nostalgic getaway, Yeonggwang Tongdak is the spot to visit.
