Cafe Layered (Bukchon store)

Cafe Layered (Bukchon store)

While exploring Bukchon with friends visiting from out of town, we decided to stop by London Bagel Museum in Anguk for takeout.

However, the wait time was ridiculously long, so we looked for a nearby café to pass the time. That’s how we ended up at Cafe Layered (Anguk, Seoul),  one of the most popular cafés near Anguk Station.

Layered is a charming, single-story café with a traditional Korean Hanok-style tiled roof. Though not particularly large, the café makes efficient use of its space, with plenty of seating tucked inside.

Despite its cozy size, the place was packed with people, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere.

Luckily, when we arrived at 1 pm on a Sunday, there were still two available tables, so we were able to grab a seat right away. However, within minutes, the place filled up, and we saw several people either opting for takeout or leaving because they couldn’t find a seat.

The café also had a section selling Layered’s own merchandise, which added to its unique charm.

Some of the popular cake options, like Real Chocolate Cake and Lemon Cake, were already sold out. The cakes looked delicious, but what stood out the most was the variety of scones, many of which had unique flavors.

Menu

The drink menu was posted near the cash register, offering a variety of coffee, tea, and non-coffee beverages.

For takeout, you could get 4 or 6 scones packed in a box at no extra charge, while paper shopping bags were available for 300 won.

Iced Americano  5,500 won / Orange Iced Tea 7,500 won / Earl Grey Pink Lady Cake 8,300 won / Pretzel Butter Scone  5,800 won

Since my friends are scone lovers and I prefer cake, we decided to get one of each along with our drinks.

For the Americano, there were two coffee bean options: One with a bright, acidic flavor and One with a rich, nutty profile. We each chose according to our preference, and both versions had a clean, well-balanced taste, with noticeable differences in flavor and color.

One of my friends, who doesn’t drink coffee, ordered the Orange Iced Tea. We didn’t expect much from it, but it tasted wonderful!

The drink came topped with a refreshing sorbet, making it cool and tangy without being overly sweet. Unlike generic iced teas, this one had a unique and well-balanced citrus flavor that made it incredibly enjoyable.

While sipping our drinks, we noticed that the staff behind the counter were squeezing fresh fruit juice by hand, which explained why the beverages tasted so fresh and natural. If you’re looking for a non-coffee option, I’d highly recommend the Orange Iced Tea, especially on a hot day!

Unfortunately, the Earl grey cake was a little dry, however, the Butter scone tasted incredibly rich, and the texture wasn’t overly dry like some scones tend to be. Even though I don’t normally go for scones, I really enjoyed this one.

Despite visiting during peak weekend hours, we were lucky to find a table and enjoy a relaxing break with delicious desserts and drinks.

If you’re in the Bukchon/Anguk area, Cafe Layered is a great place to check out, especially if you love scones.
