After attending an exhibition at KINTEX over the weekend, I decided to stop by Daecheongmaru (Hongdae, Seoul) for lunch.

Whenever I’m in the mood for comforting and delicious Kimchi-jjigae (kimchi stew), this is my go-to place. Conveniently located on the main street near Hongik University Station’s Exit 1, it’s easy to find and perfect for a casual meal.

Since I visited towards the end of lunch hours, the restaurant wasn’t too crowded. The cozy atmosphere gave off the feel of a traditional, family-run eatery, a warm place to enjoy some hearty Korean food.

The meal began with six types of side dishes, including raw radish, ssamjang (spicy dipping sauce), seasoned chives, lettuce, garlic pickles, and egg rolls

The pickled garlic had a unique, delicious flavor you won’t find elsewhere. The egg rolls were thick, soft, and the best part was that they were refillable.

Kimchi-jjigae  10,000 won ( + ramen noodle 1,000 won)

The kimchi-jjigae arrived in a charming, old-style pot with a generous serving of instant noodles resting on top.

Beneath the ramen, the stew was packed with chopped peppers, tofu, pork, and kimchi, all cut into bite-sized pieces.

The key to its flavor is the addition of soybean paste, which gives the stew a rich, savory depth. It’s not overly spicy and tastes like something you’d enjoy at your grandma’s house, comforting and nostalgic.

Despite being listed as a single portion, the serving size is large enough to share.

Dwaeji-gui Baekban (grilled pork with rice)  13,000 won

The grilled pork was perfectly cooked. Juicy, tender, and not overly thin. It was seasoned wonderfully and paired beautifully with the steamed rice. The meat was soft and full of flavor without being overly charred, making it a satisfying and hearty dish.
