Gebangsikdang (seongsu)
A Singaporean friend who recently visited Korea showed me a photo and said she wanted to visit this place. Gebang Sikdang in Seongsu-dong was the name of the restaurant she wanted to go to.
I regret not spending more time showing her around Seoul during her visit. We only had time for lunch and a quick dinner before saying goodbye because my schedule is so full these days.
She wished to visit also Gwangya. A Shop owned and operated by SM Entertainment, Gwangya features merchandise and music albums from SM artists. Both locations were in the Seongsu area, and they weren't too far apart, so it was quite convenient to get around.
Downstairs, you'll find Gebang Restaurant. The original Gebang Sikdang is in Gangnam, but they just expanded to Seongsu-dong.
Like a nice cafe or a clothes store, the inside had a really modern vibe.
There are also single-diner tables; the two of us were guided to a large table with dividers in between.
I found it slightly uncomfortable since the entire table swung around anytime when the diner next to me raised or lowered an arm because the support underneath was not very sturdy, despite the table's width.
In any case, I really liked the decor.
Menu
Foreigners can easily place their orders with the help of this illustrated menu. We paid 40,000 won for Ganjang-Gejang Jungsik (soy sauce marinated crab meal) that day, but the price changes daily according to market conditions.
We placed an order for a Ganjang-Gejang (soy sauce crab meal) and a Ganjang-Saeu (soy sauce shrimp meal). When it comes to soy sauce dishes, I prefer the shrimp.
Grilled Gamtae, seaweed soup, homemade kimchi and Dongchimi (radish water kimchi), a seasonal fruit salad, two sides, and one soy sauce crab are all included in the Ganjang-Gejang meal.
The Gamtae is incredibly tasty, and you can order additional for just 1,000 won.
Several à la carte options are also available, including Salmon rice bowl, in addition to the combo menu.
Some dinner menu items, such gambas and tapas, would pair nicely with alcoholic beverages.
Galbijjim (braised beef short ribs) dish is another specialty. The crab mandu (dumplings) looked delicious as well, but I'll skip that for the day.
Banchan (Side dish)
Veggies with little Korean pancakes (Jeon). The Jeon was just mouthwatering.
Ganjang Saeu (soy sauce marinated shrimp) 20,000 won
It was beautifully served and my friend was just happy.
Five pieces of shrimp for the Ganjang Saeu dish and one piece of crab for the Ganjang Gejang dish. There was a surprising amount of meat, roe, and tomalley in the soy sauce crab.
During her previous trip to Seoul, my friend dined at an all-you-can-eat crab restaurant, but she said the quality of the cuisine here was far higher.
Seaweed soup, gamtae, dongchimi, rice, and two sides.
The flavor is out of this world when you mix rice with soy sauce and wrap it in seaweed. Everything tasted great.
As I was leaving after we had finished our lunch, I noticed a pleasant aroma and discovered a diffuser by a brand called Bomford.
It was a well-known restaurant in the Seongsu neighborhood known as Gebang Sikdang, and the food there was just outstanding.
