Gebangsikdang (seongsu)

Gebangsikdang (seongsu)

During her recent visit to Korea, a Singaporean friend shared a photo and mentioned wanting to try Gebang Sikdang in Seongsu, Seoul.

Although my packed schedule limited our time together, we managed to visit both Gebang Sikdang and Gwangya, a shop owned by SM Entertainment featuring merchandise and albums from SM artists. Luckily, both locations were in the Seongsu area, making it easy to explore them in one outing.

Gebang Sikdang’s Seongsu branch is an extension of their original location in Gangnam. The restaurant exudes a modern, chic vibe that feels more like a trendy café or boutique than a traditional eatery.

We were seated at a large table with dividers, but I found the setup slightly uncomfortable, the table would shift whenever the diners next to us moved due to its less-than-sturdy support.

However, the stylish interior and thoughtful design made up for this minor inconvenience.

Menu

The menu is illustrated, making it foreigner-friendly and easy to navigate. Prices for dishes like Ganjang-Gejang Jungsik (soy sauce marinated crab meal) vary daily, depending on market conditions. On the day of our visit, it was priced at 40,000 won.

We placed an order for a Ganjang-Gejang (soy sauce crab meal) and a Ganjang-Saeu (soy sauce shrimp meal).

Grilled Gamtae (roasted seaweed), Seaweed soupHomemade kimchi and Dongchimi (radish watery kimchi), a seasonal Fruit salad, two sides, and one soy sauce crab are all included in the Ganjang-Gejang meal.

The Gamtae was so flavorful that we ordered an extra serving for just 1,000 won.

In addition to the set meals, Gebang Sikdang offers a range of à la carte items, including: Salmon rice bowl, Galbijjim (braised beef short ribs), Crab mandu (dumplings)

The side dishes were a delightful complement to the meal. Along with fresh vegetables, there were small Korean pancakes (Jeon) that were simply mouthwatering. The Jeon had a perfectly crispy exterior and a savory flavor that made them stand out.

Ganjang Saeu (soy sauce marinated shrimp)  20,000 won

Served beautifully, the Ganjang-Saeu meal included five plump shrimp. My friend, who had tried an all-you-can-eat crab restaurant on her last trip to Seoul, noted that the quality of the ingredients here was far superior.

This dish included one soy sauce-marinated crab. The crab was generously filled with meat, roe, and tomalley, making it a delight to eat. Pairing the soy sauce and crab essence with rice wrapped in roasted seaweed took the flavors to another level.

Gebang Sikdang lives up to its reputation as a standout restaurant in the Seongsu area. The soy sauce-marinated crab and shrimp meals were beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. The variety and quality of side dishes further enhanced the dining experience, and my friend left feeling happy and satisfied.

On our way out, I noticed a pleasant aroma from a Bomford diffuser, a thoughtful touch that added to the modern yet cozy atmosphere.
