Heejeong Sikdang

Heejeong Sikdang

A rainy weekend evening in Yeouido.

I found myself descending to the basement level of a shopping arcade, where I was greeted by a timeworn eatery that had clearly stood the test of time. Heejeong Sikdang (Yeouido, Seoul) is a beloved spot, especially among the office workers of Yeouido, known for its hearty Budae-jjigae (Korean army stew).

The interior wore its history proudly — aged walls, scuffed floors, and a quiet charm.
There were tablets on each table for placing orders, though none were in use at the time.

Menu

The menu is mainly divided between budaejjigae and stir-fry dishes perfect for pairing with drinks. Even in pricey Yeouido, 13,000 KRW per serving of Budaejjigae felt a bit on the expensive side.

Side dish

The side dishes included crunchy, refreshing Dongchimi (radish water kimchi) and intensely fermented kimchi with a bold tang.

Budaejjigae 13,000 won

The budaejjigae was served in a small pot, topped with half a block of ramyeon noodles, a charmingly humble presentation.

The broth here is light and clean. Not thick or heavy, offering a refreshing finish.
Unlike the rich bone broth-based versions, this one has a distinct charm of its own.

The subtle aroma of garlic and layers of umami give the broth real depth. I like to scoop out the noodles once they’re just cooked. The combination of kimchi and chewy ramyeon is always a winner.

Time to dive into the stew itself. Slices of flavorful ham and sausage, along with generous amounts of minced beef.

The vegetables include onions, scallions, and kimchi. Even after simmering over high heat, the broth stays well-balanced. Spoon it generously into your bowl and enjoy.

The light broth never feels heavy, just a gentle garlic aroma with a clean finish. Even after prolonged simmering, the taste remains balanced and never too salty.

The kimchi served on the side has a lovely acidity and depth, it pairs perfectly with the noodles. The staff were kind, and overall, I left feeling full and satisfied.
