Hyehwa Kalguksu

Hyehwa Kalguksu

This is Hyehwa Kalguksu, a famous restaurant my father introduced me, known for its delicious noodles.

Since discovering this place, I’ve become hooked on their Guksi (Kalguksu) and Fried fish. It’s a meal I crave regularly and can’t go without.

Hyehwa Kalguksu has a main building and an annex. This time, I was guided to the annex for the first time. It’s located in a small building behind the main location, next to the restroom.

For parking, there used to be a large space in front of the main restaurant, but it’s currently under construction. They kindly directed us to park in the area near the construction site.

This restaurant has even been featured in the 2024 edition of the Blue Ribbon Survey, but honestly, such recognition feels unnecessary for a place with such a long-standing reputation. It’s a beloved spot with locals, including many older people.

They also provide high chairs for children, along with smaller-sized forks and spoons, which is a thoughtful touch.

The annex is smaller than the main location but quieter, which I liked.

Menu

Hyehwa Kalguksu serves noodles in a rich, meat-based broth similar to Andong Guksi-style soup. You can also order extra noodles (5,000 won) if you want a bigger portion.

And the fried fish is an absolute must-order here.

For side dishes, they serve kimchi, radish kimchi, fresh carrots, cucumbers, chili peppers, and garlic. I especially loved the radish kimchi. While waiting for the food, snacking on fresh carrots is a nice way to pass the time.

Bassak Bulgogi (Crispy Bulgogi)  18,000 won (small)

We were a group of four adults and one child, so we ordered a small portion of Crispy Bulgogi and Fried fish to go with our meal.

The Crispy Bulgogi was tender, mildly sweet, and perfect for children as well.

Saengseon Twigim (fried fish)  19,000 won (small)

This is my favorite dish here. The fried fish here is thickly sliced, generously portioned, and perfectly crisp on the outside. When you take a bite, you’ll find juicy, flavorful fish inside.

It pairs wonderfully with the noodles.

Guksi (Kalguksu, noodles) 11,000 won

The noodles is served with a bit of seasoning paste on top. If you’re dining with kids, you can ask for the seasoning on the side. For adults, the seasoning isn’t overly spicy and it really brings out the flavor of the noodles.

The noodles are medium-thick, cooked just right, and soft. They soak up the broth beautifully, making every bite moist and flavorful.

really brings out the flavor of the dish.

Mix the seasoning into the broth and enjoy the noodles, it’s so good you’ll likely finish your bowl in no time! The portions are generous, but adding extra noodles is a great option if you're extra hungry.

We left feeling full and happy after such a delicious meal. I’m already planning my next visit! If you’re ever near Hyehwa Station, I highly recommend stopping by Hyehwa Kal-guksu. It’s absolutely worth it!
