Onjium (1-star Michelin)
Having visited Onjium (Seochon, Seoul) several times since 2018, I can confidently say that it remains one of the best dining experiences in Seoul.
With its focus on high-quality ingredients and showcasing their natural flavors, Onjium appeals to those who appreciate refined, simple cooking techniques over flashy culinary displays.
Each visit has been a delightful journey, with friendly service and dishes that are consistently memorable. Though it’s been a while since my last meal there, the experience remains vivid in my mind.
While I enjoy the window seats with views of Gyeongbokgung Palace, my favorite spot is at the bar table, where I can watch the chef’s dynamic cooking unfold right before my eyes. The restaurant often serves dishes that aren't on the menu, which adds an element of surprise and excitement to every meal.
Today's Menu
Corn porridge
A mix of various corns and rice, this dish is light and not overly seasoned, allowing the natural sweetness of the corn to shine. The unique textures of each corn kernel make it a fun and satisfying appetizer.
Onjium Soju (Korean alcoholic beverage) mixed with passion fruit
A perfect pairing with traditional Korean food, this Onjium Soju mixed with passion fruit is a delightful, fruity twist on the classic spirit.
Welcome dish
This dish, not found on the menu, includes Bu-gak (fried seaweed), dried fish, steamed rice cakes, homemade fish roe, Korean melon, and eggplant. Onjium’s ability to bring out the wonderful flavors of each vegetable is impressive.
Hip Scarlet (traditional Korean fortified rice wine)
A unique blend of Korean rice wine, with hints of whiskey and port wine, offering an interesting depth of flavor.
Crab Meat with Cherry Jelly
This chilled soup is a refreshing and delightful combination of crab meat, octopus, cucumber, watermelon, and cherry jelly, all drizzled with a cherry sauce. The balance of seafood, fruit, and creamy pine nut soup is exquisite.
Nagakmangwol Takju (Korean traditional milky rice wine)
This traditional milky rice wine is refreshing and full-bodied.
Pyeonsu (dumpling) & Twigim (deep-fried vegetable)
The Pyeonsu are vegetable-packed dumplings, with zucchini taking the spotlight. Paired with pickled vegetables and Twigim (fried stuffed chili peppers), it makes for a delicious combination that pairs perfectly with Takju (a traditional Korean alcoholic beverage).
Chicken soup
A refreshing soup featuring chicken and cucumber kimchi, this dish, which isn’t on the menu, offers a delicate, clean taste with a sour finish that evokes summer vibes.
Dalholjinju (a clean distilled liquor)
Brewed in Goseong, this clean and smooth distilled liquor offers a refined finish to the meal.
Seasonal Platter
One of my favorite dishes at Onjium, this platter includes a variety of seasonal ingredients. On a past visit, I had the unforgettable experience of enjoying Hong-eo-ae (fish liver) as part of the platter, which remains one of my most memorable bites.
'Dam' The Original
DaeHa Saseuol Jeok (Beef and perilla leaves salad)
This dish features tender beef wrapped in perilla leaves and dipped in a savory soybean paste sauce made with prawn heads. The flavors are deep and satisfying.
Goldong Myeon (noodles with vegetables)
A standout dish, Goldongmyeon features noodles in a flavorful radish kimchi and bean sprout soup. It’s easily the best version of this dish I’ve ever had.
Boksung Hwa-Chae (Peach punch)
Every visit to Onjium has been a reminder of what makes fine dining so special: high-quality ingredients, precise cooking, and a deep respect for the flavors of the food. The restaurant’s ability to surprise and delight with dishes that go beyond the menu is one of its many charms.
