Pungseongjip
For lovers of Korean barbecue, Pungseongjip (Yongsan, Seoul) in the Samgakji district is a standout destination. It’s frequently listed as one of Seoul’s top three Chadolbagi (beef brisket) restaurants, and it’s easy to see why. With its reputation for thick, high-quality beef brisket and other cuts, this spot is a must-visit for meat enthusiasts.
Menu
The restaurant’s popularity often means long wait times, so making a reservation is recommended. Known for its thickly sliced Chadolbagi, Pungseongjip also offers sirloin and pork cuts like Hangjeongsal (pork jowl cut).
While the side dishes are simple, they complement the meat perfectly. The restaurant cuts its meat by hand after each order, which means dishes take a little longer to arrive. To avoid delays, we started with three servings of Chadolbagi and three servings of Hangjeongsal.
Chadolbagi (beef brisket) 29,000 won(180g)
Pungseongjip’s thickly sliced Chadolbagi is unlike the thinner cuts typically found at other barbecue spots. Cooking this brisket requires patience, as it takes longer to properly grill both sides.
The meat-to-fat ratio was impeccable, delivering a balance of chewiness and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. The brisket was delicious on its own with just a sprinkle of salt, but it was equally satisfying served over rice.
Doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) 9,000 won
The Doenjang-jjigae was flavorful and comforting. This hearty stew pairs wonderfully with rice, making it a satisfying accompaniment to the barbecue
Hangjeongsal (Pork Jowl Cut) 20,000 won (180g)
While Pungseongjip is renowned for its beef, the Hangjeongsal was a surprising highlight. The pork’s texture and flavor surpassed expectations, offering a unique experience compared to other pork barbecue spots.
We were tempted to try the Yukhoe (raw beef), but after indulging in six servings of meat and soybean paste stew, we were far too full. It’s definitely on my list for the next visit.
While Pungseongjip is famed for its Chadolbagi, the Hangjeongsal proved to be the unexpected star of the meal. If you’re planning a trip, don’t skip the pork, it’s an experience worth savoring.
