Soba Sikdang (seongsu store)
On an unbearably hot day, I found refuge at Soba Sikdang (Seongsu, Seoul) a renowned soba restaurant in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, to enjoy a refreshing cold meal.
When I visited on a Monday around 1:40 pm, I joined a queue of seven or eight groups already waiting. After about 40 minutes, we were finally seated.
Tip: Arriving closer to 2:30 pm might help you avoid a long wait, as the restaurant enters a break period at 3:00 pm. However, keep in mind that you could miss out if the ingredients run out or time runs short.
The ordering process is convenient and modern. Each table is equipped with a tablet, allowing you to place and pay for your order with ease.
Side dish
Jeonbok (Abalone) Cold Soba 14,000 won
I chose the abalone cold soba, skipping the shrimp since peeling them felt like too much work in the heat. However, the restaurant is particularly known for its Shrimp + Abalone Cold Soba.
The soba arrived chilled, with a delicate balance of flavors. If you’re not a fan of cucumber, you can ask them to leave it out. The egg roll in the dish was surprisingly delicious, and the abalone was tender and fresh without any fishy taste.
Most importantly, the cold, refreshing broth was the perfect remedy for the sweltering summer heat.
Salmon Rice Bowl 15,000 won
We opted to try the salmon rice bowl instead of ordering a second soba dish. This turned out to be a great choice!
The dish featured fresh salmon slices and fish roe, which, when mixed together, created a delightful burst of flavor. For those who aren’t fans of noodles, this is an excellent alternative.
Tamago Menchi Katsu 9,000 won
Highly recommended by others, the Tamago Menchi Katsu lived up to its reputation.
At first, I expected the fried egg to be plain, but it was expertly prepared, with the flavors complemented by the perfectly balanced sauce. This dish is a fantastic side to pair with your soba or rice bowl.
If you’re in Seongsu-dong and searching for something refreshing and satisfying, especially during the hot summer months, Soba Sikdang is the place to be.
Everything I tried was delicious, making it hard to pick a favorite. That said, the Tamago Menchi Katsu is a must-try side dish.
