If you're in the Gyeongbokgung Palace area and craving some hearty, traditional Korean food, Halmaejip (Seoul, City Center is a must-visit.

Specializing in Jokbal (pig's trotter) and Gamjatang (pork backbone stew), this beloved spot has earned a place in the Michelin Guide for 8 consecutive years since 2017. It's a cozy, nostalgic eatery where you can experience authentic flavors that have stood the test of time.

Halmaejip is tucked away just a two-minute walk from Gyeongbokgung Station's Exit 7. While it’s located at the end of a narrow alley, it’s easy to spot if you head down the path near a 7-Eleven convenience store. It can be tricky to find, but that’s part of its charm. The location adds to the sense of discovery and authenticity.

When you arrive, you'll likely need to wait, especially on a weekend evening. The line typically takes around 40 minutes. If you prefer not to wait, takeaway is available, but you’ll be charged an extra 1,000 won per side dish.

The restaurant also has a rule that you must order one meal per person and that you can’t enter unless your entire group has arrived.

As you enter the restaurant, you’ll be welcomed by the sight of Jokbal being dried with a fan, and the atmosphere is infused with an old-school vibe. The retro restroom and golden flooring evoke childhood memories, and the space has a cozy, lived-in charm that reflects the restaurant’s long history.

The vibe here isn’t necessarily pristine, but that’s part of the appeal for many visitors. It’s not about fancy décor, but rather the food and the history that come with it.

Menu

The menu at Halmaejip is refreshingly simple, offering only two dishes: Jokbal and Gamjatang. Though both are popular, we were in the mood for Jokbal, so that’s what we ordered.

Side dish

Halmaejip offers a variety of side dishes that elevate the meal, including garlic, jalapenos, radish salad, salted shrimp, pickled onions, and yeoulmu kimchi (young radish kimchi). The combination of flavors from these sides pairs perfectly with the rich and tender Jokbal. For those who opt for Gamjatang, the sides are slightly different, often featuring ssamjang, cabbage kimchi, and mustard sauce.

The Jokbal was nothing short of spectacular. The meat was incredibly tender, practically melting in my mouth, while the skin of the pig’s trotter was delightfully chewy and flavorful. The dish was more than enough for two, with a large bone in the center, which only added to the richness of the meal.

What made the Jokbal even better were the amazing side dishes. A combination of sweet and sour radish salad, ssamjang (fermented soybean paste), lettuce, garlic, and peppers paired beautifully with the tender meat. Each bite was a burst of different flavors, and I couldn’t get enough of the delightful contrast between the savory pork and the refreshing sides.

Halmaejip is a place where you can experience a piece of Korea’s food history. It’s a spot that feels rooted in tradition, with simple yet delicious food and a nostalgic atmosphere. Whether you’re visiting after a day of sightseeing at Gyeongbokgung Palace or just looking for a cozy place to enjoy authentic Korean cuisine, Halmaejip is the perfect spot.
